One of our literacy goals at Ben Franklin, is to expose all of our students to Fry’s 1000 Words by the end of the student’s fourth grade year.
The Fry 1000 Words were created by Dr. Edward B Fry, a Professor Emeritus, Rutgers for 22 years and a member of the Graduate School of Education. He is an expert in Reading. The list of Fry’s 1000 wordsare a list of themost common words used in Englishranked in order of frequency.
25 words make up approximately 1/3 of all items published.
100 words comprise approximately 1/2 of all of the words found in publications.
These high frequency words should berecognized instantlyby readers.
300 words make up approximately 65% of all written material.
